Texas Tech Football versus Eastern Washington Blog

Pregame was cool, the Ultimate Tailgaters were super cool. Joanna and I enjoyed their hospitality.  Ran into the ex-gf at the second tailgate that we visited.  Wasn’t uncomfortable as I thought it would be.

Then up to the press box to cover the game and update the work webpage.

Texas Tech intercepts the lEastern Washington first possession and we have a rushing touchdown. Weee 7-0 Red Raiders.  After a three and out Tech goes and drives again.  ANOTHER RUSHING TOUCHDOWN! But for the first time since 2004 the extra point was blocked.  It’s kinda scary as you don’t want this to be an omen for the year. 

First thing I’ve noticed is that we are still getting WAY too many penalties.

Almost have taken the whole first quarter and Crabtree finally has his first receiving touchdown.  Two point conversion is GOOD to Detron Lewis.  This sophmore is going to be dangerous this year.  As the defense doubles and triples Crabtree Lewis is going to be a dangerous player.  I like the moves that Coach Leach has put in this year however I am still concerned about the defense.  Still seems to be asleep.

After the Crabtree touchdown, the defense locks down and we are done with quarter number 1.  Texas Tech 21- lEastern Washington 0.

This year, sponsorship means nothing for work and I don’t have to miss a play whatsoever.  In some cases I wish we had the visability, but in other cases, I don’t miss half the second quarter.

Tech holds once again and Eric Morris is returning the punts.  I like this kids spirit.  Not the tallest player, not the biggest player, but the player with the biggest heart. Yet ANOTHER Penalty!  Six for sixty yards in the first quarter alone.  First play after the return and INTERCEPTION.  Graham threw that where there wasn’t somebody ready to catch. 

Will the bend, but don’t break defense hold?  Can you say PENALTY for roughing the passer? UGH.

The stat sheet shows 5 receptions for Michael Crabtree for a touchdown and fourty yards, but most of it came on a 24 yard reception.  The team seems to be just sleepwalking.

No bending, but full on break. Touchdown for the Eagles and it’s 21-7 Red Raiders. 

I’ve got Big 12 Officials to my right and they are grading the referees.  Funny to see the ref’s getting ripped by refs.

A kickoff and can you say yet another penalty?  This is getting rediculous!

9 penalties so far and they are approaching the 2000 Baylor game record of 17 penalties in one game.

A fumble in the end zone and lEastern Washington recovers.  OR was it a touchdown?  Let’s go to the videotape. Knee was DOWN and the Ref stutters his way through the explanation.  Let’s try it again.  TOUCHDOWN Shannon Woods, THIRD RUSHING TOUCHDOWN for a PASSING team.  28-7 Tech. 208 yards in

Shennanigans and Hijinks my friends.  Yet ANOTHER Tech Penalty for the 10th team penalty.  I have a feeling that both Coach Leach and McNeil will have the team a running.  Tech will kick off from the 15 yard line.

lEastern Washington starts from the thirty.  We have our first entertaining moment of the game when the Ref leaves the mike open and a portion of the conversation goes “HEY , tell that idiot…” before the line judge comes up and notifies him that it is on.  I have a feeling that Texas Tech won’t be the only football involved members that will be running laps.

INTERCEPTION 91 Rashaun Henly with the pick and the lEastern Washington drive is done.  7:59 in the 1st half.  You do something good and then. False Start.  11th penalty of the first half.  When will we have a “Come to Leach Meeting?”

4th and 3. Do we punt.  HELL NO. We take yet another penalty. 12th of the first half.  And then we punt. Yes, it was a tactical penalty. We punt and lookie lookie, yet ANOTHER PENALTY!  13 isn’t a lucky number. Wow. 

I can’t take much more of this. 28-14 Eastern Washington.

Off to the tailgate for a Razzmatazz to take the edge off.  SHEESH this is painful to watch.

They score before the half was over with a 55 yd field goal and it’s 28-17 at the half.

NO Razzmatazz for me. Focusing on the second half and yet still on tilt from halftime conversation.

Tech drives to the EW 3 yard line.  Fail to convert 4th down and Leastern Washington drive stumbles to a punt.  We fumble the punt.  Total undisciplined play.  After a fourth down sack and a blocked FG Tech drives with 6:26 left in 3rd quarter.  Can someone say PENALTY? 14th of the game.  Is it sad that I mark significant efforts of this game from the penalties.  2nd and 12 from the 14th. Amazing catch by Baron Batch. 

3rd and two, and Crawford gets Horse Collared. 1st and Goal. Fade pass to Edward Britton, TD Red Raiders 35-17 with 4:51 left in the 3rd.

Now is this a matter of us playing down to our opponents?  Or are they playing up to us?

I have a feeling that the one thing that is negating our specialization is Eastern Washington’s Speed.  Speed kills as a former boss would say.

Now with 3 and change left in the second quarter we were up 28-7 but lack of discipline has allowed the third quarter to end with Tech only up 35-24. 

I have to give it up to Eric Morris.  He’s the player that all the grade school kids love.  He isn’t tall, he isn’t big, but he has heart and that’s the difference between just a player and a kid that could make it when everyone else said that they couldn’t.

Does the name Zack Thomas ring a bell?

With 11 min left Red Raiders are cheering as the Arkansas State 18 – Texas A&M 14 final hits the big screen.

Wow.  What a day of upsets?  Or are they?

Virginia Tech Loses to East Carolina 27-22 , Michigan loses to Utah 25-23, Bowling Green beats Pitt 27-17.

Ugh, if this is the year of “Big Things”, I am scared.

The Fiesta Bowl rep was in the press box tonight. What an effort we made.
