Texas Tech vs Nebraska OVERTIME

1st and 10 and Nebraska’s pass is incomplete.

Nebraska calls Heads…  They win. Nebraska wins the toss and wants defense first. 

Tech starts with the ball at the Nebraska 25.  Liam has to be loving this. 

Baron Batch with the first play in overtime to take a pass a six yards behind the line and takes it to the Nebraska 1.  But a delay of game makes it 1st and goal at the Nebraska 6.

Baron Batch back to the 1 with a 5 yard run.  Baron is proving to be the running back of the future for the Red Raiders, hell, he’s proving his starting worth.

3rd and goal at the 1

The ELF (Eric Morris) gives the Red Raiders a 37-31 lead.  Donnie Corona’s Extra point is NO GOOD.

Defense HAS TO STOP THEM.

:29 seconds left and Tech has it at their 20 yard line.

Pass incomplete to Crabtree and time is running out. 

OVERTIME!

1:03 and it’s yet another first down back to back by Todd Peterson.  1st and 10 at the Red Raider 25 yard line.

Are we that bad or is Nebraska that good?  The defense has their hands on their sides.

Time for magic?  Remember what I said weeks ago?

No leaving the stadium early this afternoon.  2:15 left with the ball at the NU 21.  Time to see which of these boys become men.

First down run by Joe Ganz and 1:42 left with NU having the ball at the NU 32.

SACK and Ganz goes down and he will go down hard.  Brandon Williams with the sack 2nd and 15 for NU.

But Marlon Lucky get 26 and NU goes out of bounds with 1:08 left Texas Tech takes its last time out.

NO MORE TIME OUTS FOR EITHER TEAM!

2:23 left…   No time outs for Nebraska…  Harrell runs it in and Tech Scores.  It won’t be by 21 but it should be a win.  Donny Carona give the entire stadium a heart attack as he hits the post and goes through.  WHEW 31-24 Tech.

3:06 in the 4th and 1st and Goal at the Nebraska 5.  1 Time out for Tech and 2 for the Huskers left.  Nebraska takes its 2nd time out as Baron Batch runs it to the Nebraska 2 yard line. 

Liam is probably going crazy in his seat.  Dad now probably wishes he was here for this game.  A WHOLE different ballgame then 70-10.

Nebraska calls its final time out and its third and goal at the one.

6:06 in the 4th and as Pete Christy and I talk about the game we’ve come to the conclusion that how we react to this will be telling for the season.

How about a heaping helping of Baron Batch?

BIG Drop by Crabtree and Nebraska didn’t catch the midair fumble.  Tech is now to 3rd and 6 at the 34.  With his defense not showing up giving up over 400 yards of offense will Tech go for it on fourth down?

Shannon Woods with a SHOVEL PASS? Are you kidding me? 

Tech goes for it and this will be the ballgame.

All they were trying to do was to get the Huskers to jump but having to run it 47 yard catch by Crabtree.  Now it’s time for us to run some clock at the Nebraska 13 yard line.

Defense?  What defense?  Anyone who took Nebraska and the under looks like a genius today. 

Darcel McBath had a perfect interception slip between his fingers and its back to the devil down for the Red Raiders defending 3rd down.  And once again the devil has his way as Nebraska’s Ganz is pressured but finds a receiver for the first down.

But Nebraska says, “Here, let us help you.” As a false start makes it first and fifteen at the 20.

Swing pass and the Red Raiders say, “No, really, please score” as Marlon Lucky gets a 14 yard pass and then runs it for the first down.

7:06 left in the game and the natives are getting restless.  Where is the swagger?  Where is the attitude? Why am I mentioning too many Nebraska players?   Because no one is showing up.

Drew Young from Ganz and we have a TIED game at 24 with 6:06 left in the 4th quarter.

10:10 left in the game and now it is time for defense.

The team is down, the fans are down and the greyness of the skies have affected the team.  Time for the big plays!

HUGE play for Nate Swift for 43 yards and the ‘skers are in Red Raider Territory at the 25.

The little things are what kills you, not the big.  Special Teams and actions after the whistle are keeping this game close.

Welcome to the 4th quarter…

And welcome to the security contingent who have made there presence known.  A “meeting of the minds” has commenced under the “Protect This House” banner and they start to spread out.

1st and ten as the 4th quarter starts for Nebraska at the Tech 12.

Jamar Wall holds 1st down to a one yard game and 2nd and 9 and follows it up with a stop to bring up 3rd and 8 at the Red Raider 10.  False start on the offense and now Nebraska is trying to keep from starting the self destruction that they have been know for this year.

But Nate Swifts 5 yard route isn’t good enough and BRING ON THE KICKER!

FAKE , FAKE, FAKE and they bring it to the 1 yard line.

Special Teams will be REAMED for that one and Ganz runs it in to make it 24-16 with Henry’s point after good 24-17 with 12:10 left in the game.

53,449 in da Jones!  Niles Paul starts his return and 4:40 left in the 3rd.  Start the GRIND!

And Nebraska is grinding the ball ten yards at a time.

SACK!

But a personal foul on an “alleged” hit to Joe Ganz head causes Nebraska a first down.  Texas Tech coaches call a time out and spend most of the time out explaining to the Ref why he was wrong.  The penalty stands and the ref gets completely booed from the entire stadium.

Nebraska is continuing to drive. As the 3rd quarter ends Nebraska is driving and the score is 24-10 Tech.

8:00 3rd Quarter Tech 1st and 10 at the Tech 23.

Detron Lewis continues to outshine Crabtree with a 31 yard gain shrugging off a tackle after ten yards.

Baron Batch with a big run and tack on a Personal Foul and Tech has the ball at the Nebraska 5.

Well, just as I say it…Harrell to Crabtree 4 yard completion for a touchdown.  23 and now 24 with a Myyyyyy Caronnnna extra point to ten for Nebraska

3rd quarter, Nebraska gets the ball and Tech is bending once again.  Everyone wants to watch a blowout, but a blowout they will not see.

Roy Helu is kiling the Texas Tech secondary and they have finally entered the Red Zone.  Now will the defense hold?

Roy Helu is pushing his way to the end zone and time of posession in the first half was 20 min to 10 in favor of Nebraska.

The bend but dont break defense holds and Nebraska is held to a field goal 17-10 Tech with 8 min left to go in the 3rd quarter.

HALFTIME:

Liam and Ally enjoyed the game so far, which that there wasn’t as many penalties for Nebraska.  I have to admit Nebraska is playing smart.  Keep the ball, drive slowly and don’t let Texas Tech have the ball.

1:11 Niles Paul returns the ball to the Tech 31 from 4 yards deep in the end zone.  Now does the defense hold?  It has to be the early game syndrome. Tech in years past has struggled in games before 6.

After a holding call Nebraska has another holding call and it’s 2nd and 23 at the Tech 44.

Almost a interception by Jody Rowland and Nebraska has to try a long field goal into the wind or do they dare try to throw to the end zone?

HALFTIME!!

2:37 Tech decides that it isn’t going to take them all day to score.  56 yard pass Harrell to Edward Britton and sets up 1st and 10 at the Nebraska 14.

After a roughing the passer Tech has 1st and goal at the Nebraska 4 with 1:23 left in the half.

Shannon Woods up the middle for the Red Raider touchdown and the sun starts to shine over the Jones.

Overpursuit by Tech and Ganz finds an open reciever.  The defense is bending with a first down. 

A lot of stunts by the Nebraska offensive line and they have Tech on their heels. Tech finally calls a “Come to McNeil” meeting.  The entire defense is surrounding an ANGRY Ruffin McNeil. 

The Media announcement on the field is highlighting 4 of the (Competing Radio Company) stations but leaves out the #1 station and the # 5 station.  Very interesting.

There is not a seat to be found in the house…

Even after the time out Tech still gives up the first down.

Darcel McBath decides to make an impact and is trying to get the defense fired up.  Tech needs a stop and a quick score before the half is over. Nebraska will get the ball (very likely) for the start of the second half.

COMPLETE for 12 yards and the Huskers are still going.

Throw it away, run and now 3rd and 7 for Nebraska.  4th and 1 and the give to Lucky, I thought that he had made it but the surge wasn’t enough.  Tech 1st down at their own 30.

8:19 26 yard field goal try by Donnie “My” Carona is good and Texas Tech is leading 10-7.  3:33 scoring drive.  Field Goals will not win a game when everyone expects Tech to roll.

11:46 First possession of the second quarter and tech starts at the 32.  The team starts with runs and keeps a modified no huddle. 

Baron Batch with a 49 yard run and Nebraska is on their heels.

Nebraska’s game plan looks to be to slow down the game with a concentrated attack while Tech is set with get it going, get it in the end zone.

Nebraska is driving as my brother and sister in law get to their seats.  1st and goal at the 4 and Nebraska scores.  11:46 in the 2nd.  What will Texas Tech do? Can they recover and when will the defense stiffen?  Will they stiffen?  7-7 tie.

End of 1 and the score is Texas Tech 7 Nebraska 0

3:39 in 1st and the kids are here!!

4:58 Tech finally throws to Crabtree and it was incomplete.  But second try is good for a thirty five yard touchdown.  Carona, is GOOD!  Crabtree 31 touchdowns is a new Texas Tech CAREER leader.  3:18 is a long time for Tech to hold the ball, but its good enough for a TD!

7:14 Driving, driving, driving…  still waiting for my brother to call me, when the game started he was in Slaton.

10:18 in the 1st and Nebraska is driving.  Lots of short passes and with the exception of a holding penalty.  in the first drive Tech didn’t have a penalty.  UT looks like it will beat OU and now the Tech vs UT game is even more important.  But first things first… Tech has to show up. 

As soon as I say it, big sack and the Swarm holds.  First and Ten Tech at their own 20.

13:06 1st Quarter Harrell changes the play and the Nebraska rush gets to him. Leach decides to punt against the wind and Matt Swift is not so swift as The ‘skers will start 1 and 10 at the 18.  Tech was trying to throw against the wind.

Quarter 1:  Nebraska kicks off and the short kick gives Tech good starting possession on the 32 yard line.  TIme for the Air Raid to begin.

Why Raid when Shannon Woods can gain 9 yards.

Again Tech will continue to run until Nebraska stops it.

Half the press box is watching the game while keeping an eye on the UT vs OU game.

Pregame:

Well the rain has left for now and cloudy skies yet still cover the Jones.  My brother, love him that I do, is late and I will have to go down and drop him his tickets when he does arrive.  I still wish that Dad and Mom could have made the trip but they are still enroute from Scotland.  I hope that you two enjoyed your trip.

As I went to do the traditional before game handwashing, out of the Nebraska Coaches room comes out coaching legend Tom Osborne.  We talked for a couple minutes and he was very nice.
